What is fabric shrinkage?

When buying clothes, have you ever encountered such a situation: newly bought clothes shrink after one wash and become tight. This is because fabrics have a shrinkage rate. Shrinkage is the extent to which a fabric becomes smaller in size after washing or drying. Different fabrics shrink at different rates, and understanding these differences can help us shop and care for our clothes better.

Generally speaking, cotton fabrics have a higher shrinkage rate, especially when washed for the first time, and may shrink by 5% to 10%. This is because cotton fibers are stretched during the weaving process, and the fibers return to their original length after washing, causing the garment to shrink. Wool fabrics also shrink at a high rate, especially if they have not been specially treated. If washed or dried in hot water, the wool fibers will curl, which can lead to severe shrinkage of clothing. Therefore, dry cleaning is generally recommended for wool clothing, or hand washing in cold water.

In contrast, synthetic fibers shrink much less. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon have been shaped at high temperatures during production, so their shrinkage rate is usually less than 1%. However, the shrinkage rate of blended fabrics will be between natural fibers and synthetic fibers, depending on the proportion of ingredients. In addition to fiber type, shrinkage is also affected by other factors. For example, the density of the fabric, yarn thickness, production process and fabric structure will affect the shrinkage rate. Generally speaking, the higher the density of the fabric, the finer the yarn count, the more complex the production process, the lower the shrinkage rate.

To avoid buying clothes that shrink badly, you can first check the label of the garment for its composition and washing instructions. If it's a cotton or wool product, it's best to follow the instructions and wash it carefully, or reserve a little bit of space for the size in case you can't wear it after it shrinks. Understanding these related fabric knowledge can better help us buy our favorite clothes and fabrics.
